Year 12 English Curriculum Plan (UK)
Year 12 English focuses on developing analytical, critical, and creative skills at a level appropriate for A-Level or equivalent. Pupils study a wide range of texts (literature, non-fiction, media, and poetry), learning to analyse, evaluate, and produce sophisticated writing.
Core Aims
By the end of Year 12, pupils should be able to:
- Read and critically analyse a variety of texts, including literary, non-fiction, media, and poetry.
- Evaluate authorial choices, narrative techniques, stylistic devices, and thematic content.
- Plan, draft, edit, and refine extended analytical, evaluative, and creative writing.
- Apply advanced grammar, punctuation, and sentence structures with precision.
- Develop and apply a wide-ranging, sophisticated vocabulary, including subject-specific terminology.
- Speak and argue persuasively in formal and academic contexts, including presentations, debates, and seminars.
- Research, reference, and structure extended essays or assignments.
Autumn Term
Focus: Literary analysis, analytical writing, and critical reading
- Weeks 1–2: Introduction to literary theory and analysis techniques.
- Weeks 3–4: Reading and analysing a modern novel; characterisation, themes, and narrative voice.
- Weeks 5–6: Analytical essay writing – point, evidence, explanation, evaluation structure.
- Weeks 7–8: Grammar and punctuation consolidation – formal writing style, sentence variety, complex structures.
- Weeks 9–10: Poetry analysis – structure, form, language, imagery, and tone.
- Weeks 11–12: Speaking and listening – presentations and seminar-style discussions.
Spring Term
Focus: Non-fiction, media, extended analysis, and comparative skills
- Weeks 1–2: Reading comprehension – analysing non-fiction texts, media, and persuasive writing.
- Weeks 3–4: Comparative essays – analysing similarities and differences across texts.
- Weeks 5–6: Creative writing – advanced narrative, descriptive, and imaginative techniques.
- Weeks 7–8: Critical analysis of drama – themes, structure, characterisation, and stagecraft.
- Weeks 9–10: Grammar and vocabulary – sophisticated sentence structures, precise diction, and academic style.
- Weeks 11–12: Editing, proofreading, and refining extended essays.
Summer Term
Focus: Independent research, advanced writing, and exam preparation
- Weeks 1–2: Extended literary essays – theme-based, author-focused, or comparative.
- Weeks 3–4: Creative writing – advanced descriptive passages, narrative experiments, or dramatic scripts.
- Weeks 5–6: Non-fiction writing – formal reports, analytical essays, articles, and academic papers.
- Weeks 7–8: Exam-style practice – timed analytical and creative writing tasks.
- Weeks 9–10: Research and referencing skills – using secondary sources, citations, and textual evidence.
- Weeks 11–12: End-of-year assessment – extended essays, creative writing portfolio, and oral presentations.
Assessment
- End of Autumn Term: Analytical essay writing, comprehension, and critical reading skills.
