Year 7 English Curriculum Plan (UK National Curriculum - KS3)
Year 7 English builds on KS2 skills, introducing KS3 expectations for reading, writing, and spoken language. Pupils read a range of texts, develop their writing for different purposes, and begin to analyse language and structure more deeply.
Core Aims
By the end of Year 7, pupils should be able to:
- Read and understand a range of fiction and non-fiction texts.
- Write effectively for different audiences and purposes, using a range of structures.
- Use grammar and vocabulary accurately to enhance writing.
- Speak and listen confidently in formal and informal contexts.
- Begin to analyse texts, identifying language techniques and author's intent.
- Produce creative writing with developing characters and plots.
Autumn Term
Focus: Reading fiction and narrative writing
- Weeks 1–2: Introduction to KS3 English – reading comprehension and annotation.
- Weeks 3–4: Reading fiction – understanding plot, character, and setting.
- Weeks 5–6: Narrative writing – developing stories with structure.
- Weeks 7–8: Descriptive writing – using language for effect.
- Weeks 9–10: Creative writing projects – short stories and poems.
- Weeks 11–12: Assessment and review – reading and writing skills.
Spring Term
Focus: Poetry and spoken language
